整套专辑包含的管风琴曲均非为圣咏曲或众赞歌所作,可视为巴赫对音乐本质纯粹探索的代表作.专辑的核心作品<赋格的艺术>,长期以来曾被认为是巴赫的最后作品而被赋于另一层面的特殊含义.实际巴赫从逝世的8年前--1742年即开始构思其中某些对位的旋律了,即使现在我们了解病塌边写作这样一部作品只是一个传说(传说的诞生主要应归功于C.P.E巴赫为了推广父亲作品所作的宣传),仍然不得不承认<赋格的艺术>是巴赫最为奇特而留给人们最多不解之迷的一部作品.放眼历史长河,再也没有其余任何一部音乐作品如<赋格的艺术>般几乎完全凐灭失传却又凤凰涅磐,随着研究的深入,我们得到的只是更多的疑惑,1935年以来的80多种录音证明了巴赫作品所具有的无法比拟的无限可能性,这种可能性包含了每一个细节以及音乐最基本的那些元素:乐器,顺序和节奏.
